HOLY SATURDAY

Traditionally, as the priest announces Jesus' Resurrection during the Saturday morning Mass, the black drapes drop from the icons and members of the congregation rap their seats to express their joy. Later in the morning, Easter Bread, pastries and cheese pies, known as Flaounes, are baked in all the homes. At midnight everybody dresses up in their Easter best and gather to listen to the Mass of the 'Good Word'. Part of these celebrations and activities are taking place in our grounds as follows:

Anassa Village Square

The traditional bonfire 'Lambradjia' is set alight: ceremony of burning of Judas' effigy symbolizing his punishment for the betrayal of Christ.

Ayia Athanasia Chapel – Anassa Village Square
The Service culminates at 12 midnight when the church lights are put out, then relit with the new light symbolising the resurrection, and the bells resound for miles around, announcing the resurrection of Christ.

Amphora – Midnight Supper
After Mass, people exchange warm wishes and return home holding a candle lit with the new resurrected light. All guests are invited to partake in a traditional bowl of 'Magiritsa', a delicious local soup, together with 'Flaounes' and coloured eggs before retiring to bed, offered with our compliments. EASTER SUNDAY

Easter Sunday is set aside for celebration and feasting. A traditional Easter lunch is served, with dishes such as Lamb Souvla and 'Flaounes'.
Easter would, of course, not be completed without the traditional egg-cracking contest with colored eggs.
